It’s 4:55 pm. I’ve slept 2.5hrs of the last 36. The vet dims the lights in order to better read the CT scan. We’ve spoken twice on the phone today, in between teaching my classes, leaving me cognitively prepared for the images on the screen. But emotionally? Rage begins to bubble up in my stomach. Each time my eyes leave his & fall back onto the tomography, showing where the infection has eaten away at poor Cilantro’s muscle & skull, I feel the squeeze of my rising blood pressure

The nurse- the same one who consoled me 2 weeks ago when Marsela choked to death on her own saliva after a year of neglect- brings Cilantro into our room. He is wrapped in an orange towel; she is wearing a mask & gloves. My eyes fill with tears, & I breathe the anger out of my body. I’ve learned over the years to keep anger away from these creatures- they deserve better. She passes him to me gingerly

“Hey, buddy,” I say with as much joy as I can muster. “I’ve been so excited to see you all day.”

I place Cilantro down on the exam room table. I can feel the nurse brace herself as I get down on my knees to really look at him for the 1st time. There is a literal hole in his face. I knew this already, from my discussion with the vet, from viewing the CT scan, from the clairsentient pain I’ve developed on the left side of my jaw in the course of the day. There is a hole in my rabbit’s face, & I can see his teeth from the outside. Despite the relentless debriding the vet did, the rotting stench of his necrotic tissue is still unmistakable

CILANTRO UPDATE- Critical Condition

We would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who donated to the care of Cilantro yesterday, the dumped rabbit found in Danbury that we rushed to Pieper Memorial Hospital late in the evening. Cilantro’s journey has just begun. After being stabilized last night, he was seen by the Exotics team at Pieper for assessment this morning. Currently, his doctors suspect that he has a tooth root abscess that has eaten through his facial tissue; his left eye is swollen shut, and much of the tissue on his left cheek is completely dead. We are also concerned that cancer may play a role in his condition. We have authorized Pieper to begin a CT scan on Cilantro’s head and chest, as well as get bloodwork.

Cilantro is an incredibly friendly and spirited rabbit, despite the obvious trauma he has experienced. We do not suspect that he was outside for long before approaching his saviors, meaning that someone dumped him outside in this condition, leaving him to die. We are frustrated that nobody will ever be brought to justice for this cruelty, despite it being a felony on both a state and federal level.

Cilantro has a long road ahead, and he has shown us his will to live. We will continue to fight for him as long as he wants us to do so. We have put $2,100 down just towards his diagnostics in the last ten hours; if he is a candidate for surgery, we will need several thousand more dollars.

🚨 URGENT! FUNDS NEEDED FOR CRITICALLY INJURED DUMPED RABBIT! 🚨

We have been rescuing nonstop since Saturday. There are six bunnies in our care we haven’t gotten to introduce to you yet. We are tired and hungry and sick. But none of that matters, because this bunny needs our help NOW, and he’s going to get it.

This rabbit has an injury to his eye, and has an active infection that is causing parts of his body to rot. He is going to Pieper Memorial Hospital TONIGHT. We already know the estimate for his care will be thousands of dollars, and we will have to pay it up front.
