Foster Parents Needed

You provide the love and attention our rabbits need while they await their forever home. This invaluable service allows us to care for bunnies that need our help while we search for a new location.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is fostering?

Fostering is generously opening your home to a domestic rabbit in need until they can get adopted into their forever home.

Oftentimes, the rabbits we rescue are formerly abused and neglected with nowhere to go and could use the extra love. You can tell they’re appreciative to have a second chance at life!

What is required of me? How much will it cost?

Fostering should cost you next to nothing! Everybunny Counts will provide all initial supplies with the exception of produce and rugs. We can send you additional supplies and/or reimburse you via Venmo or PayPal for hay, food, toys, and litter refills.

Do I need prior experience?

Nope! We can teach you about bunnies along the way, however we ask that you research rabbit care prior to completing the foster application.

Those who are medically confident can apply to be a medical foster. Medical fosters are required to administer medicine, including administration of oral and subcutaneous medications, as well as wound cleaning and extended grooming needs.

Can I foster if I live outside Connecticut?

Unfortunately no, we cannot accept fosters that reside outside Connecticut at this moment.

How long will I need to foster for?

It depends on the health of the bunny and the adopters’ interest. Generally, fosters may stay for a few months to a year.

What if I’m going away on vacation?

If you need vacation coverage or can’t continue fostering, we will always find someone else to take the bun for you.

What if my foster rabbit needs to go to the vet?

Everybunny Counts pays for all medical expenses using our donations. We typically schedule our medical appointments at Star Meadow Animal Clinic in Farmington, CT. We ask that fosters bring their rabbits to appointments when possible. We typically schedule at least two visits – one for intake and one for spay/neuter. If you absolutely cannot transport your foster bunny to/from the vet, we can arrange a volunteer to do so.

What should I do in the state of an emergency?

Please contact us immediately. We will provide help and guidance.

How much space is required?

Ideally, we would like to see enough space for the foster rabbit to play and run. We will be providing you with a 4×5 ft playpen and ask that you bunny-proof the room (especially wires and cords) prior to your foster bunny’s arrival.

How often will you keep in touch?

We will check in via text or phone call every now and then. Feel free to send updates and/or photos periodically through email, facebook, or instagram. We may feature your bunny on our social media and will definitely use these photos for their petfinder profile.

What if I have children or other animals in the house?

That’s okay! However, we do ask that you disclose each family member (child and/or animal) in your home within our foster form.

What if I fall in love with my foster bunny?

We endearingly call that a foster failure! Luckily, if you fall in love with your foster, you will get first dibs on adopting your bun 🙂

What if I don’t like my fostering experience?

We prioritize a good experience for our bunnies and foster families. If you dislike your foster experience, please notify us immediately and we will make rearrangements.

Our foster bunny was originally found outside in December, scared, starving and frail. Within a week with us, he gained weight, confidence, and made himself comfortable in our home. It’s been incredible watching his transformation firsthand. You can tell he’s so thankful that we took him in!

Whenever a family comes to adopt a bunny, we do ou Whenever a family comes to adopt a bunny, we do our best to match the right bunny with the right family. Although many families come in with specific bunnies in mind, we like to think the bunnies choose their families too

This was certainly the case for two of our Thanksgiving Side Dish boys this past spring! Brussel Spout’s mom knew she wanted to meet him, and, as you can see, he chose her right back. Gravy Boat also fell in love at first sight with his family! We love when a match feels right and our bunnies fit in right away. Seeing them find the perfect forever family is what keeps us going

Flop Friday meets Hoppy Adoption! Our Friday Flop Flop Friday meets Hoppy Adoption!

Our Friday Flopper this week is Mashed Potato! Potato was one of our Thanksgiving Side Dish Babies who went into our foster-to-adopt program and was officially adopted after his neuter this past spring. He has become known as Flying Potato for both his binkies/zoomies and his perfect helicopter ears! We love to see our alumni living their best lives. Thanks to his mom Leeanne for the great photos 💖

It’s been one full WHEEK with the Addams Family! It’s been one full WHEEK with the Addams Family!

The Addams family— including their barely day-old babies— were abandoned alongside a trail in the South End of Hartford last week. Luckily, one of our fantastic volunteers found them not far from their open cage, and was able to scoop them up and bring them to us. Thus began our short stint as a multi-species rescue!

In addition to the Addams family, we brought in ELEVEN new bunnies last week- a mother and daughter who had been abandoned as well as a mom, dad, and seven brand new babies. As you can guess, we are once again at full capacity

Here’s where you come in: please help us with supplies! Our literal and figurative piggies are burning through hay faster than we can bring it in. Sending us boxes of hay off our wishlist is a huge help. The pigs and buns would also love more tents to hide in and toys to play with.

🔗 to our wishlist in the usual spot! Or comment “Going shopping” below and we will send it to you directly. Thank you!
