Frequently Asked Questions

who can volunteer?

We welcome volunteers of all ages and backgrounds. Some volunteers come to us knowing everything about bunnies and some start off knowing nothing at all. Regardless, we provide training and a mandatory orientation.

Depending on the tasks being completed, volunteers may be asked to lift up to 10 pounds (pens, litter, hay, take out trash), use wrist movements (sweeping, writing, grooming), bend legs and crouch (clean pens/fill food or water), and walk up stairs. These are general guidelines and are not requirements. Everybunny Counts happily accepts volunteers of all levels of mobility and we will gladly provide accommodations (when possible) to make your experience as comfortable and rewarding as possible.

Any volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied and supervised by an adult throughout their time at our facility.

How much commitment is required?

Our volunteers are required to attend an in-facility orientation (we host them quarterly) and commit to either weekly or bi-weekly shifts to assure that our buns always have someone caring for them.

Volunteer shifts are Monday-Friday from 5:30-6:30 PM and Saturday and Sunday from 10-11 AM. Depending on the amount of rabbits in our care and number of people on your shift, it can take between 1 and 2 hours to complete your duties each week.

Will I get to cuddle with the bunnies?

Absolutely! We encourage our volunteers to help socialize our rabbits. Once all cleaning tasks have been completed for your shift you are welcome to snuggle, groom and play with the buns.

What if I need to miss a shift?

Sometimes things come up that prevent you from attending a scheduled volunteer shift. If you are feeling ill, we ask that you stay home out of caution for the safety of your fellow volunteers.

In the event that you need to miss a shift:

  • Post in the Volunteer Facebook Group and let your shift mates know.
  • Give 48 hours notice for all absences when possible.
  • If you are a senior volunteer, please notify us so we can find coverage for you.
Why don’t you disclose your location online?

Our facility is not open to the public, aside from advertised special events.

Please help us prevent illegal dumpings by not sharing our address with anyone outside of approved EBC volunteers.

Our facility is equipped with an alarm system and a code entry system for our main entrance. Senior volunteers and board members have these codes and will be responsible for opening and closing each shift.

Do you offer community service credits?

Yes! Please let us know if you intend to have your volunteer hours apply towards community service or other volunteer programs for work or school. We ask that you track all of your hours and submit them for verification by a board member via email at least ten days before they are due.

Is the facility accessible for folks with limited mobility?

Our facility has ample parking near our unit but does not have marked accessible parking spots. We have a ramped sidewalk to our front door, flat entrance and ramp into the rabbit room. Our office, storage room and adoption room is only accessible via stairs. Our facility is not equipped with automatic door openers or an elevator at this time. If you need assistance or accommodations navigating our facility for volunteer shifts please let us know! Our team is committed to making the experience of caring for rabbits available to as many people possible.

We are so happy to share that Melangell is making We are so happy to share that Melangell is making a steady recovery and has found her forever home…here with us at EBC 🩷

When we brought Mel home on Thursday, her heart and ours were aching over the loss of her brother Metztli. In a last ditch effort to get Mel to eat on her own, we introduced her to our sanctuary rabbit, Pierogi. It was love at first sight, and Melangell immediately dove into their shared litter box and chowed down on hay- something we haven’t seen her do in nearly three weeks. Melangell has a ways to go before she is fully recovered from her various GI and skin issues, but she is better and brighter than we’ve seen her yet. And Pierogi is even willing to share his hidey house with her!

We couldn’t stand the thought of parting with Melangell, and now she has a permanent spot as our third sanctuary rabbit with EBC. She has stopped biting everybody (thank god) and is asking for pets from volunteers! When Mel is fully recovered, we will spay and vaccinate her; we are grateful to the kind individual that sponsored her wellness care.

Thank you to everyone who rooted Melangell on. From an unloved basement bunny to a spitfire icon, we are so grateful to have her as part of our family 🩷

Our next volunteer orientation will be Sunday, November 16th, at our facility in Ellington, CT. Our volunteers are the backbone of our organization; we couldn’t work the miracles we do without them. Space is limited, so be sure to sign up soon!

After every diagnostic on the face of the earth, we have no real reason for why Melangell has had severe GI upset for 10 days. Given that she is her bright, bitchy self, Dr. Sojka and I decided to give her another chance at home. I will be syringe feeding her every several hours and continuing supportive care.

This rabbit, man. #melangellvstheworld

If you would like to contribute toward keeping this spiteful bun alive, please hop on over to the l¡nk in our b¡o. Ignore Melangell trying to telepathically tell you to hop off 🫶
Metztli, our beautiful boy. You deserved so much b Metztli, our beautiful boy. You deserved so much better. You deserved the world. How someone could have ignored the sweetest, gentlest soul as he suffered in pain every day…we will never understand.

We chose to give Metztli the most loving gift we could tonight: peace. Once Metz was sedated for his CT scan and dental filing, I chose to wait at Pieper until he woke up. I very quickly received bad news; Metztli’s imaging showed nearly every tooth in his mouth was broken, and almost all of his jaw was filled with infection. There would be no quality of life, even after surgery. With the help of Dr. Sojka, and loving technicians Jonathan and Tina, we peacefully freed Metztli of his suffering. He crossed the rainbow bridge with more love in that hospital room than he had felt in almost seven years of life.

There are two things I know to be true:
1. It is the highest honor to be a guardian and a shepherd to a soul like Metztli, even as grief stands at my door again.
2. Our rescue will do everything in our power to protect Metzlti’s sister Melangell.

If you would like to donate in Metzlti’s memory and continue to support his sister Melangell’s extensive care needs, please do so via the l¡nk in our b¡o

Binky free, Metz. Until we meet again. 🩷
Melangell & Metztli: 2 Basement Buns Fighting for Melangell & Metztli: 2 Basement Buns Fighting for a 2nd Chance

When we took Melangell, all we knew was she needed help. She’d been alone in a basement for a year with only food & water; her owner wouldn’t touch or clean her. After hearing Mel would be thrown outside for being “too messy,” a local vet tech agreed to take Mel & get her to rescue. Mel came with long nails, ear infections, & caked on feces

Oct 27, Mel was seen for a well exam. She wasn’t eating normally, but we chalked it up to adjustment. Nov 1, her foster told us she was in stasis. Mel went to Bolton Vet that day & got stasis meds. Nov 4, after no improvement, she was admitted to Bolton. Mel presented with possible liver disease, continued stasis, & new diarrhea. We picked her up Nov 5 & had her admitted at Pieper Vet for an abdominal ultrasound. Now, we’re concerned for uterine disease, since she is unspayed

Then, we found out Mel wasn’t alone- she had a brother. Sure enough, Nov 4, he was dropped with the same tech in worse shape than Mel. We named him Metztli, for the moon god with craters made by rabbits. Metztli was a, “get in the car, we’re going to the hospital,” intake. He was also admitted to Pieper. Metztli was covered in his drool. He can’t eat, & as a result, can’t poop. He has a nasty jaw infection; we’re awaiting CT scan results

If they didn’t show fight, we’d let them go. But they tasted love & want more. Mel is fire; her opinions are WELL known. She demands pets & babying. Metztli is all sugar; he showers you in kisses & snuggles

Diagnostics for this duo will cost us $7k; this does NOT include treatment & procedures they’ll need once stabilized. We’re doing our best. Our regular donors have emptied their wallets, but we still need help covering the rest

Above are their bills. You raised $2k for Metztli already, but we have a long way to go. The easiest ways to help are DONATE via the 🔗 in our b!ö & REACT, COMMENT, & SHARE this post. The farther our reach, the better the chance of saving these buns

Thank you. We couldn’t work the miracles we do without your support
