Dixie

Molly Abrahams, Oct 2021

My partner and I brought our lionhead Charlie for bunny speed dating to meet some of the available buns.

Since Dixie had been in the rescue for so many years we felt she deserved to go to a home and have a husbun. We have had them together now for two years and they are so in love – they always snuggle up and munch together.

Dixie has come a long way. Before she would run and hide whenever a person walked near her pen. Now she will run up to smell our hand and take treats from us. It’s been nice to see her become more social and we are happy she has a loving home as she gets older.

We are bursting at the seams! Unfortunately, we h We are bursting at the seams!

Unfortunately, we have to close to ALL intakes at this time. We do not have the physical space or financial capacity to care for any more rabbits. We have plenty of rabbits waiting for adoption; you can save two lives by adopting a bunny to help make space for future rabbits in need

PLEASE, if you are able, DONATE and SHARE our story!
Donations can be made via the 🔗 at the top of our page!
Yesterday, Melangell was touched by a human hand f Yesterday, Melangell was touched by a human hand for the first time in over 365 days. The touch was her owner picking her up to give her away.

Melangell has spent more than the last year alone in her owner’s basement, with no interaction aside from the bare minimum of food, water, and litter box changes. Why did her owner bring her to a veterinary clinic to surrender her? Because she smelled badly from the year’s worth of feces caked on her hind end, and she didn’t want to clean up after her any more. We are so grateful to the veterinary technician who stepped up and found a rescue for Melangell, because her original owner was threatening to “release” her outside if nobody at the clinic would take her.

Melangell is nearly five years old, and of course unaltered, putting her at major risk of uterine cancer. She received two butt baths, a much needed nail trim (see photo), ear cleaning, and treatment for her walking dandruff (mites) as soon as we got her into rescue. As you can see by her third eyelid in the photos, she is nervous around people as a result of being kept out of sight for the last 20% of her life. Melangell weighs eight pounds, has a glorious dewlap, and thinks all stacking cups should go straight to hell. Seriously, she’s throwing them off the couch as I write this.

This saintly bunny will be our last intake until at least Thanksgiving. We are WAY above capacity with 65 rabbits and guinea pigs in rescue. Donations are at a yearly low, and animal abuse and abandonment is at a decade’s high. We have no choice but to continue our high standard of care for the bunnies and piggies in our care until they find their FOREVER homes.

Melangell now has a second chance at life, and we’re giving her all the things she has always deserved. If you can help support Melangell’s veterinary care, please donate below via the 🔗 at the top of our page

Did you catch the preview of what Chef Janet was c Did you catch the preview of what Chef Janet was cooking in the kitchen? Did you think it was FOURTEEN little pieces of pasta?

In a record size litter for EBC, Janet gave birth to fourteen beautiful baby bunnies last night. Our lucky mama was surrendered to one of our rockstar foster families after their teenage daughter overheard that Janet’s owners were threatening to dump her outside. We can’t imagine how horrifying it would have been for this sweet girl- who is no more than seven or eight months herself- to birth these babies in the cold all alone. She was so proud to show us her work as soon as she was done!

While we lost three little ones before or shortly after birth, Chef Janet is being an amazing mama to her eleven surviving babies. Her fresh, home-made pasta dishes are Orzo, Spaghetti, Fettucine, Ravioli, Rigatoni, Bucatini, Ditalini, Jumbo Shell, Gnocchi, Tortellini, and Penne. We may not have expected these babies, but we already love them to bits. In a strange way, we are grateful that Janet’s first owners no longer wanted her, because now we get to show Janet and her babies how rabbits really deserve to be loved and cared for.

If you are reading this and are impressed by Chef Janet’s pasta-rolling skills, we could really use your help in one of two ways:

1. Our rescue is BURSTING at the seams and we need foster homes; we have 64 animals in rescue right now! If you can foster a bunny or guinea pig, please apply here: https://everybunnycountsct.org/foster

2. Can’t foster, but have $14 to spare? The cost of veterinary expenses alone for these rabbits will be nearly $2,500. If you are reading this and have an extra $14 in your bank account, please consider donating in honor of Janet’s incredible fourteen babies. Donate here: https://tinyurl.com/everybunnycounts OR @EBCrabbitrescue on PayPal.

Tell us your favorite type of pasta in the comments!

AND FOR THE LOVE OF CHEF JANET’S BIRTH CANAL, SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR RABBITS!
