Foster Parents Needed

Do you love rabbits? Are you interested in being a bunny parent, but unsure if you’re ready to dedicate 10 years to a new family member? Fostering a rabbit is a great way to experience bunny companionship for the first time. We provide training, supplies and veterinary care to all fosters. You provide the love and attention our rabbits need while they await their forever home. This invaluable service allows us to care for bunnies that need our help while we search for a new location.

Let’s get started

Frequently Asked Questions

What is fostering?

Fostering is generously opening your home to a domestic rabbit in need until they can get adopted into their forever home.

Oftentimes, the rabbits we rescue are formerly abused and neglected with nowhere to go and could use the extra love. You can tell they’re appreciative to have a second chance at life!

What is required of me? How much will it cost?

Fostering should cost you next to nothing! Everybunny Counts will provide all initial supplies with the exception of produce and rugs. We can send you additional supplies and/or reimburse you via Venmo or PayPal for hay, food, toys, and litter refills.

Do I need prior experience?

Nope! We can teach you about bunnies along the way, however we ask that you research rabbit care prior to completing the foster application.

Those who are medically confident can apply to be a medical foster. Medical fosters are required to administer medicine, including administration of oral and subcutaneous medications, as well as wound cleaning and extended grooming needs.

Can I foster if I live outside Connecticut?

Unfortunately no, we cannot accept fosters that reside outside Connecticut at this moment.

How long will I need to foster for?

It depends on the health of the bunny and the adopters’ interest. Generally, fosters may stay for a few months to a year.

What if I’m going away on vacation?

If you need vacation coverage or can’t continue fostering, we will always find someone else to take the bun for you.

What if my foster rabbit needs to go to the vet?

Everybunny Counts pays for all medical expenses using our donations. We typically schedule our medical appointments at Star Meadow Animal Clinic in Farmington, CT. We ask that fosters bring their rabbits to appointments when possible. We typically schedule at least two visits – one for intake and one for spay/neuter. If you absolutely cannot transport your foster bunny to/from the vet, we can arrange a volunteer to do so.

What should I do in the state of an emergency?

Please contact us immediately. We will provide help and guidance.

How much space is required?

Ideally, we would like to see enough space for the foster rabbit to play and run. We will be providing you with a 4×5 ft playpen and ask that you bunny-proof the room (especially wires and cords) prior to your foster bunny’s arrival.

How often will you keep in touch?

We will check in via text or phone call every now and then. Feel free to send updates and/or photos periodically through email, facebook, or instagram. We may feature your bunny on our social media and will definitely use these photos for their petfinder profile.

What if I have children or other animals in the house?

That’s okay! However, we do ask that you disclose each family member (child and/or animal) in your home within our foster form.

What if I fall in love with my foster bunny?

We endearingly call that a foster failure! Luckily, if you fall in love with your foster, you will get first dibs on adopting your bun 🙂

What if I don’t like my fostering experience?

We prioritize a good experience for our bunnies and foster families. If you dislike your foster experience, please notify us immediately and we will make rearrangements.

Our foster bunny was originally found outside in December, scared, starving and frail. Within a week with us, he gained weight, confidence, and made himself comfortable in our home. It’s been incredible watching his transformation firsthand. You can tell he’s so thankful that we took him in!

We celebrated International Rabbit Day this past w We celebrated International Rabbit Day this past weekend in the best way we know- with our amazing volunteers!

Everybunny Counts is an entirely volunteer run organization, from our board members, to our fosters, to our daily volunteers. Most of us work full time and dedicate our free time to the bunnies. We could not continue the work we do without the generosity of all of our team members! All of the donated time, talents, and funds make the rescue work possible.

So, from the tips of our noses, to the ends of our fuzzy toes(es), THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS!

We are beyond heartbroken to share that Wrigley di We are beyond heartbroken to share that Wrigley did not survive the surgery to remove his abscess.

To be explicitly clear, Wrigley would have died without this surgery. His blood is entirely on the hands of his neglectful owners, who failed to get him medical care, and then put him out on the curb for free. Wrigley made it to rescue too late.

We are grateful to his finder, to everyone who donated to his care, and to everyone who sent words of encouragement. Wrigley was an Easter bunny- a gift for a child. He deserved so much better than the hand he was dealt.

Please honor Wrigley’s memory by sharing his story and advocating against the quick sale of animals, especially rabbits, who are often denied the protections afforded to them under the law.
**UPDATE** Wrigley sadly did not survive surgery t **UPDATE** Wrigley sadly did not survive surgery to remove the abcess from his shoulder. It was a very large mass & surgery was difficult. As a result, he passed away from complications.

DONATIONS NEEDED FOR WRIGLEY- THIS is why you don’t purchase rabbits for Easter!

We find ourselves saying “at least they didn’t (insert animal cruelty here)” pretty frequently these days. Today we said, “at least they didn’t just toss him outside to die.” But here’s what Wrigley’s previous owners DID do:

-Purchase an underage rabbit from someone who couldn’t even sex him properly. Wrigley was known as “Lilly” for the last 5 months
-Purchase an animal with little to no research, gift it to
a child for Easter (even though the warnings not to are everywhere), & then expect that child, who probably needs reminders to brush their own teeth, to take care of it
-Allow a mass the SIZE OF A BASEBALL (Wrigley- get it?!) to grow on Wrigley’s right shoulder, leaving him unable to hop correctly
-Neglect to bring him to the vet for the mass, or his raging ear infection
-Keep him in a cage unfit for even a hamster for his entire life, until:

Leaving him outside in his cage with a “for free” sign, with not a care in the world what happened next

AT LEAST the woman who found Wrigley wasn’t a pet flipper, a backyard breeder, or a kid looking for target practice. AT LEAST she wasn’t looking for a free meal for her snakes. Thank god Wrigley’s finder didn’t think twice before snatching him up & immediately getting in contact with us. AT LEAST there are some people who care about all lives, even when they weren’t initially our responsibility

Tomorrow, Wrigley & his baseball will visit Dr. Adair at VESH for an initial consult. We truly have no idea what to expect in terms of diagnosis & treatment, but we do know that even just diagnostics will be expensive. Wrigley will likely get bloodwork & imaging tomorrow, & our first bill for him could easily be $1,000.

If you can donate to Wrigley’s care, please do so via the 🔗 in the usual spot

If you can’t donate, PLEASE SHARE! Wrigley is just one of the lucky Easter bunnies- so many never have the chance to thrive the way we hope to give him
